Membership

Founded in 1922, The Garden Club of Westfield, Inc. has been joyously gardening, educating, and promoting conservation ever since. We have 30 active members who contribute their time and talent to support our civic projects and educational activities that are the heart and soul of our organization.

Club members maintain several public gardens:

  • The Blue Star By-Way in Tamaques Park, dedicated to the servicemen and women of the United States Armed Forces, displays shades of red, white, and blue from late May through October.
  • The Mindowaskin Park Daffodil Hill was refurbished in 2022, when the club worked with the Department of Public Works and the Friends of Mindowaskin Park to plant 4,000 daffodil bulbs and a wildflower meadow. Across the park, are wildflowers and redbud trees planted in honor of Betty List, a distinguished member of the club and devoted elected public official who served three terms on the Westfield Town Council. To the right, viburnum shrubs and hellebores line the sidewalk.
  • At Reeve House (occupied by the Westfield Historical Society), we maintain a shrub and perennial border along the front of the property.

Members also participate in the following on-going projects:

  • For 75 years, we have supplied the Westfield Memorial Library with a weekly flower arrangement for library patrons to enjoy.
  • Five large planters containing seasonal flowers, at Elm and E. Broad streets in the center of town, are planted and maintained year-round.
  • We select a Garden of the Month, May through October, to show appreciation to the property owner. The garden must be visible from the street so that all may enjoy it.
  • Evergreen wreaths are decorated and hung on the Municipal Building and delivered to the Department of Public Works and the two firehouses, to show appreciation to our public employees.

In addition to our usual projects, the club engages in special projects, when grants and fundraisers allow.

We learn continuously through workshops, day trips, and the member’s monthly meeting, which includes a program related to gardening, horticulture, floral design, or environmental issues.

New members who would enjoy supporting our mission through active participation are always welcome. The membership meets at noon on the second Monday of the month September through June. Active participation that supports our projects on a regular basis is expected, as is regular attendance at our monthly meetings. We are a working club, but we love what we do and have fun doing it! By doing, we not only benefit the community, but we grow our skills, strengthen our talents, and make lasting friendships. Come grow with us!
